ELAN is a free, multi-platform annotation tool for audio and video, developed at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen. It's the industry standard in linguistics, language documentation, conversation analysis, and qualitative research. ELAN reads transcripts and lets researchers add multi-tier time-aligned annotations: phonetic, syntactic, gestural, prosodic, anything they need to study.
What ELAN does
Plays back audio/video synchronized with a tiered timeline. Each tier holds annotations of one type — words, phonemes, gestures, gaze direction, code-switching events. Annotations are time-aligned to the media. Researchers can search across tiers ("find all instances where Speaker A used the word 'because' while gesturing"), export to CSV/XML, and integrate with statistical tools.
ELAN and ASR
ELAN doesn't have built-in transcription — researchers typically use a tool like Transcript.you to generate the initial transcript, then import it into ELAN for further annotation. ELAN reads many transcript formats: SRT, plain text with timestamps, Praat TextGrids, CHAT (CHILDES), and its native .eaf format. We export plain timestamped TXT and DOCX, both of which ELAN can import via its tier-creation wizard.
When you'd use ELAN vs a regular transcript
ELAN: linguistic field research, conversation analysis, gesture studies, language documentation, multimodal corpus building. Just a transcript: journalism, podcasting, blog drafts, court reporting, lecture notes. ELAN is overkill for non-research workflows but indispensable when you need to annotate dozens of analytical layers per utterance.

A linguist studying Spanish-English code-switching patterns: record bilingual conversations, run them through Transcript.you for the base transcript, import the timestamped TXT into ELAN, add tiers for language ID per word, syntactic structure, and conversational role. Then search for triggers of code-switches across hundreds of hours of recordings.
