Tool comparison

Transcript.you vs Otter.ai

Honest side-by-side. Both are great tools, but they're optimized for different jobs. Here's the comparison most other "vs" pages don't write.

TL;DR

Otter is built for live meetings — its killer feature is a desktop assistant that joins your Zoom calls and produces a real-time transcript. Transcript.you is built for recorded audio and video — podcasts, lectures, interviews, voice notes — with 40+ AI features (summary, blog post, translate) attached to each transcript and a more generous free tier ($0 for unlimited short clips vs Otter's 300-minute monthly cap).

Pricing

Accuracy

Both tools sit in the 92–96% accuracy band on clean audio. Otter's 2024 redesign improved punctuation; Transcript.you uses Whisper-3 directly which is slightly stronger on accented and multilingual audio. The difference is noticeable for non-English content but negligible for English.

AI features beyond transcription

Otter's AI is focused on meeting outcomes: action items, summaries, decisions. Transcript.you offers 40+ feature types across content creation, research, and study — including blog post drafting, Twitter thread generation, viral clip identification, study flashcards, and Cornell-method notes. If your goal is repurposing podcast episodes or YouTube videos into written content, Transcript.you wins on AI feature breadth.

Supported formats

Otter primarily takes audio uploads in MP3, M4A, WAV, AAC, MP4, and a handful of others. Transcript.you takes MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG (including WhatsApp .opus voice notes), FLAC, WMA, plus video formats (MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WEBM, WMV), plus direct YouTube, TikTok, and other social URLs.

Output formats

Otter exports TXT, DOCX, PDF, SRT, and Otter-native formats. Transcript.you exports TXT (free), DOCX, PDF, SRT, and VTT on Premium. Functionally equivalent.

Privacy & data handling

Otter retains audio and transcripts on their servers indefinitely (subject to plan-level retention settings). Transcript.you deletes uploaded audio immediately after transcription; only the resulting text is kept, and only if you're signed in. Neither company trains models on user data by default.

When to pick Otter

  • You spend most of your day in Zoom / Google Meet / Teams calls and want live captions
  • You need an "Assistant Bot" that auto-joins meetings on your calendar
  • Your team will use Otter's collaborative editing features on shared transcripts

When to pick Transcript.you

  • You want to repurpose the transcript — into blog posts, Twitter threads, study notes, summaries
  • Your free-tier needs are occasional but unlimited short clips, not 300 min/month of long files
  • You work with non-English content or WhatsApp / OGG voice notes
  • You want the cheapest path to paid (yearly Pro at $4.49/mo)
